Lusting For Local Food

Typically, Valentine’s Day is marked by red hearts and roses, but on Sat., Feb. 14, 2009, green will be the color du jour. On Valentine’s Day, Georgia Organics, Slow Food and SoutheastGreen.com will host a “Lusting for Local Food” benefit featuring cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres, a family-style seated dinner and dancing—all with a “green” theme. “Lusting for Local Food” will be held at The Gardens at Kennesaw Mountain, a sustainable, green event facility located at 1127 White Circle NW, from 6 to 10 p.m. The event will cost $40 per person for Georgia Organics or Slow Food members and $50 per person for non-members. Profits raised from the event will benefit Georgia Organics and Slow Food.

By utilizing foods grown within the local area and by having a low impact on the environment, “Lusting for Local Food” will spotlight the effort to "be a local" and how it can done. Parsley's Catering, a 20-year-old, family-run catering company that focuses on local and organic foods to highlight "fresh, creative cuisine", will help design a menu to include organic micro greens, locally produced cheese, winter vegetables grown on area farms and organic pork and beef. Event planners already purchased carbon offsets for the event assuming half the estimated people will drive 30 to 40 miles to get there. They also plan to compost all the organic waste from the evening and recycle all items that can be recycled.
