Atlanta-based multifamily developer and operator Post Properties was recently awarded a Multi-Housing News Green Services award for its company-wide recycling efforts.
The first annual Green Initiative Awards were created to recognize achievements in the multifamily industry. The entries were judged against the accomplishments of others in the same category as well as on the entrants’ own progress in advancing ideals outlined in their respective mission statements.
Although not all markets in which Post operates mandate recycling, the company still provides recycling centers in each market, and began broad recycling endeavors dating back to 1995. Post’s recycling centers collect 840 tons of newspaper, glass and aluminum annually. The company’s recycling initiative not only reduces waste, but Post also realizes a waste haul avoidance benefit of approximately $100 per ton recycled.
All carpet used within Post’s communities is recyclable and is collected at the end of its life, rather than taken to the landfill.
Recycling is just one program under the direction of Post EcoActive, a program dedicated to supporting Post’s vision to educate associates and residents on the benefits of conserving earth’s natural resources through best practice programs and processes.
“We are honored to be recognized for our sustainability efforts,” said Steve Sadler, vice president of ancillary services. “Through Post EcoActive™, we will continue to refine our company operations to remain an industry leader for environmental stewardship.”
The company also minimizes its environmental impact through submetering and eco-conscious landscaping. Two of Post’s newest properties (including Post Alexander in Atlanta) feature green roofs, which limit water runoff, control heating and cooling costs, and maximize roof life.
