John Hope Elementary School Goes Green

On Saturday, Nov. 15, volunteers met at  John Hope Elementary School to help make make it more environmentally friendly as part of Hands On Schools, an innovative national program that aims to reestablish schools as the focal points of communities.

Hands On Atlanta, a Hands On Network affiliate, led the volunteers from Sprint, the school and the surrounding community as they launched a recycling program and help reduce the school’s environmental footprint. Volunteers and students prepped the school to launch a recycling program, including constructing holders for trashcans and recycling bins and tinting windows in the computer lab among other projects. Addressing the region’s shortfalls of gas and water, the volunteers also built rain barrels and a special scooter parking space for a low energy vehicle driven by a teacher.

Beyond the project day, Sprint’s engagement provides a catalyst for John Hope Elementary to provide its elementary students with curriculum and ideas about going green, creating a lifetime of support for the environment and inspiring the school and community to get more involved. This is one of eight environmentally-focused Hands On Schools projects Sprint is supporting.
