Link
Register individually at www.keepatlantabeautiful.org. Click on the link to "Register Now" and fill in your personal information. There will be a free t-shirt to all who volunteer and there
will be a free lunch with live music following the cleanup. Please don't forget to put "AARPCV" in as your organization name so that we can all work in the same general vicinity. Lastly, please shoot me a quick email to confirm that you will be attending, that way we will know how many folks to be looking for on the day of the event. (emilymartin_1@hotmail.com) Please plan on bringing sunblock and plenty of water. Also, for those not located within walking/biking distance, let me know if you need a ride to the event...and we can coordinate that as well. I hope to see you all soon!

Keep Atlanta Beautiful Needs Your Contest Entries

Keep Atlanta Beautiful is now calling for entries for the Stepping Lightly in Atlanta Awards Contest, an environmental stewardship-based contest for individuals and groups aged 5-18 in metro Atlanta. Children and young adults are invited to submit entries for model projects that demonstrate how they have reduced their ecological footprint in their home, class, school or community. They can choose from a variety of environmental issues to concentrate on such as water conservation, waste reduction, energy and transportation. The deadline for applications is April 3, 2009.

Electronic Recycling Every Month at Grady High

Keep Atlanta Beautiful (KAtlB) has partnered with Atlanta Public Schools (APS) to provide e-Waste recycling drop-off centers in the City of Atlanta.  KAtlB and APS have kicked off the program at Grady High School where students and local neighbors will have a permanent location to recycle old electronics every third Saturday of the month.  Aaron Turpeau, Chair of KAtlB, says “we are pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to supplement the City of Atlanta’s recycling program by giving residents an option to recycle items not picked up at the curb, like e-Waste and compact florescent light bulbs (CFL’s).”

The new Midtown e-Waste program officially started last month to provide Atlanta residents a way to properly dispose of their old computers, TVs, CFL’s and other electronics. During the Keep Atlanta Beautiful Earth Day cleanups in April, more than 30,000 pounds of e-Waste was collected at Grady High School and recycled.  E-Waste materials tend to pile up in homes and if discarded in landfills, lead oxide, mercury and other highly toxic hazardous waste can leach into the ground.  KAtlB partnered with Georgia eWaste, a local electronics recycler that recycles and reuses various components.  For example, the lead in glass computer monitors and TV screens can be recovered, then the glass recycled, plastic housing can be ground to smaller pieces and recycled for use in various items, circuit boards and chips can be reused to repair older electronics and metal components are separated and sold for scrap.
